Diamonds are a girl’s best friend, but not everyone is savvy when it comes to buying jewelry. How do you decipher which rock is a gem worth splurging for and what is flawed? Diamonds may have come from nature, but it needs a practiced jeweler to cut, polish and set it, for it to be of value. Well now, it’s as easy as ABC or should we say learning the CCCC.

  1. Cut:

The most essential step is to determine the cut of the diamond. The mastery of getting a well-cut diamond is that it enables the diamond to shine brighter by letting more light in. A badly cut larger diamond is not as valuable as a beautifully cut smaller one – so pay attention. The shape should be symmetrical and well defined. It should be perfect.

The measurement ranges are Excellent – Poor.

  1. Color

The second most important C, because it also affects the way your diamond looks and is valued, is the color. Color really refers to the lack of color in a diamond. Unless you are buying a fancy colored diamond, all diamonds should be colorless completely.

The measurement is from D (completely colorless) to Z (light yellow).

  1. Clarity

It refers to how cloudy or not a diamond is. It also tells you whether the diamond has any inclusions and spots or not. Whilst such irregularities are natural, the more flawless a diamond the more expensive it is. Also, while these may be microscopic and escape the human eye, it’s an important aspect of the stone, and  does affect the price.

The measurement range is IF/FL (Internally flawless) to S12 to even 11 12 13

  1. Carat

Perhaps the most inconsequential of the 4 c’s, the carat refers to the weight of the diamond and not the size. 1 carat is .20 grams. Most people would rather get a more flawless diamond than get a larger, cloudy one.

Pro Tip – A 1.4 carat diamond is drastically cheaper than a 1.5 carat diamond as is any diamond that has a weight below the important marks example- .5,1,1.5,2 etc. So it would be wise to look into that.

And lastly, whilst you may be a connoisseur of excellence, it’s an old adage that if you don’t know your jewelry then you should know your jeweler.
